CHAPTER 185: THE FALL AND THE UNKNOWN
THE FALL AND THE UNKNOWN
With grim determination, you slam your boot downward, shoving the already unstable ladder away from the wall. The structure collapses with a tremendous crash, the metallic screeching mingling with the feral groans of the zombie horde. The ladder strikes the swarm with brutal force, scattering the zombies and briefly interrupting their relentless pursuit. The noise reverberates throughout the shaft, an unintended dinner bell for any undead within earshot.
You cling to the edge of the hatch, feeling the vibration of the impact still tingling through your arms. As the dust settles, the ceiling above groans ominously, a reminder of the precariousness of your sanctuary. You haul yourself upward, adrenaline fueling your ascent. Your eyes scan the dimly lit space, trying to assess the stability of the area you've locked yourself into.
The crack from the ceiling intensifies, chunks of debris beginning to rain down. You scramble to your feet, heart pounding, as you realize that staying here is not an option. The ceiling could come down any minute, either crushing you or dumping you back into the arms of the ravenous undead below. You need a plan, and quickly.
As you weigh your options, the sound of distant footsteps reaches your earsβsomeone or something is approaching. Friend or foe, you can't be sure, but time is running out.
