SHATTERED REFUGE

CHAPTER 45: SHATTERED REFUGE
Panic surges through you as the ceiling continues to crumble. Instinct takes over, and you pull the survivor with you, frantically searching for any pocket of safety amidst the chaos. Your eyes lock onto a narrow alcove formed by two large boulders leaning together, creating a small, hopefully stable shelter. You drag the survivor toward it, your hearts pounding in synchrony with the rumbling earth.

The space is barely large enough for both of you, forcing you to huddle close as the dust swirls around like a living shroud. Each breath is a struggle against the choking cloud of grit. You shield your eyes with one arm, peering through the gloom. The avalanche of rocks mercifully bypasses your shelter, pounding the ground mere feet away with enough force to crater the earth.

But respite is fleeting. The air is thick with the acrid scent of dirt and sweat, and every minute feels like an eternity. The survivor, clutching his injured leg, groans in agony, his face pale and drawn. His eyes meet yours, a mix of gratitude and fear.

Suddenly, a massive boulder dislodges from above, crashing down near your refuge. The ground shakes violently, and new cracks spider-web out across the crevice, threatening to engulf you. You realize that staying here for long will surely spell doom. Time is running out, and you must act fast.
All Choices That Were Available:
  • 1. Use your body to shield the survivor further and plan an escape route together.
  • 2. Abandon the survivor and make a run for the crevice entrance, caring only for your survival.
  • 3. Trigger a small explosion to blast a new exit, ignoring the potential consequences.
  • 4. Quietly assess the structural integrity of the alcove, considering the safest path to exit when the tremors subside.
